Christopher Columbus High School’s Drama Program has been on a roll this year, succeeding and creating the space for an even more excellent future.

Mrs. McGrath, communications teacher and moderator for the drama program, couldn’t be prouder.

“Drama has performed well above and beyond my expectations,” she said. “The kids always surprise me with their creativity and their ability to do well under pressure. I’m just really proud of them.”

The team’s hard work has paid off, earning top honors and superior ratings at competitions this year.

According to Victor Barreda, ’25, an officer of the drama team, “This year we got more superiors on deck. Recently, we’ve got top honors and perfect scores from adjudication from Broadway judges.”

He noted that the team’s scoring trends have been improving steadily, setting them up for even greater success in the future.

Looking ahead, the team is preparing for the state competition. Mrs. McGrath shared her perspective on what’s to come:

“Theater’s subjective, so you think you might be doing well or maybe you’re not, and you won’t find out until you get there. But the kids work hard. I always know that they work hard. We’ve qualified for nationals, and every single year, we’ve competed.”

Victor is equally confident about the team’s prospects.

“Every event that goes to states scores superior, and it’s our highest of the year,” he said. “We’re expecting beyond great things.”

The Spring play is another exciting chapter for the program. Auditions will be held soon, and Mrs. McGrath is encouraging students to get involved.

“In drama, in theater, there’s a place for everybody. Whether you’re on the stage or off the stage, whether you’ve done it before or not… Columbus is a brotherhood, but drama is your family,” she said. “We’re having another meeting this Wednesday, and then we’re gonna hold auditions Thursday for the spring show.”

Victor also emphasized the value of just seeing what the drama program is about in a simple statement.

“Try out theater,” he said.

As the Columbus drama team rounds out the year, passion and dedication promise a fantastic finish. With states and the spring play on the horizon, they're ready for an eventful second semester.
