The Daily Math Helper: National Math Honor Society

By Brandon Spaulding

The National Math Honor Society is a student-leadership organization for students who are in honors and AP math courses and are committed to academic excellence and devotion. Beyond leadership positions, the honor society helps the school at large.

The society is led by Moderator Mr. Carlos Moro in room C-14 and each member of this organization can tutor in room C-14 and the Desmond Center, from Monday to Friday before and after school.

The Benefits of the National Math Honor Society

Students in the program realize how beneficial the Math Honor Society for the student population.

"The Math Honor Society helps students by relieving that stress that they have over math because it’s a lot of information and it’s actually one of the hardest subjects. And when kids have those questions we’re here to help them out. So, I think that the more help they have the less workload and stress they’ll have and it’s just a chain reaction of helping kids out," he said.

“NHS is the best way to improve your math skills no matter where you are or what grade level you are in,” says Student Secretary Roy Rodriguez.

Mathematics is one of the largest branches of education. There are tens of courses/levels in the Math Department. As students graduate from grade to grade, they will learn skills from one course and apply them to another higher course.

“I believe the Math Honor Society is a way to bond between all students, regardless of grade or class level, and helps make math as a subject seem less scary for everyone. Because of the Math Honor Society, Columbus cannot only be better academically but be better and stronger as a community as well,” said Society President Daniel Casamayor.

If students cannot grasp the skills they are taught in one grade, then they will struggle in other grades. Math is only possible to master if one decides to practice repeatedly. With the availability of resources from the Math Honor Society, the success of every student can be guaranteed.

“The Math Honor Society gives struggling students a safe space to learn and/or review,” said Mr. Moro.

With the tutoring offered by the National Math Honor Society, students can hone their math skills to better prepare for college and future courses. On another note, it is also a place where safety and guidance are the two most important principles.

“With the tutors’ guidance, students can not only learn themselves but can also teach or help others as well,” said Mr. Moro.

Tutoring should be an entertaining and engaging experience, instead of stressful or monotonous. Students should be encouraged to connect with each other to bond and learn together to thrive.

“Struggling students benefit greatly from their peer knowledge,” said Mr. Moro.

Everyone goes through struggles in their lives. In school subjects, it is no different. Some students’ parents may not have the ability to afford a tutor, as it may cost up to $115 an hour. With the free tutoring offered by the Math Honor Society, students can learn effectively without their parents having to pay extra.

”I’ve seen tutors teach concepts to students better than me sometimes.” said Mr. Moro.

In closing, there are vast advantages of the Math Honor Society. With no cost, daily assistance, and a positive work environment, any student can excel in math courses at Christopher Columbus High School. It is available every day before school and after school, so do not miss out on gaining lasting lessons from the Math Honor Society.

”In the great words of Yoda, do or do not, there is no try,” said Mr. Moro.
