The Future of the Silver Screens: Anticipated Films for (the remainder of) 2024

by Robert Chica

In no particular order, the most anticipated films from October to December of 2024 Include remakes, sequels, adaptations, and original stories.

Gladiator II

CCL

Following the historical epic that was Gladiator (2000) Ridley Scott is returning to direct, but with a completely new cast. Starring Paul Mescal (Aftersun), Denzel Washington (American Gangster), Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian), Joseph Quinn (Stanger Things), and the only returning cast member reprising her role as Lucilla is Connie Nielsen. The film follows years after the first film as tyrannical Emperors who now rule Rome force Lucius Verus, son of Lucilla, to take back Rome from the Iron Fist rulers. The film has big shoes to fill with the first film winning five out of the twelve Oscars the cast and crew were nominated for including the major wins in Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Actor (Russell Crowe), and Best Picture in 2001. The first film garnered $465,387,186 on a $103,000,000 budget. Gladiator II was filmed on a $316,000,000 budget, we'll just have to wait and see if the sequel will outshine the original, but I'm doubtful.

Release Date

  • Theatrical (Wide) - November 22, 2024

Saturday Night

Gabriel LaBelle and Julia Butters during the Cocktail Reception at the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Award, held at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023. (Jay L. Clendenin/Los Angeles Times/TNS)

An interesting concept, to say the least, is following the opening night of the 50-year-old show Saturday Night Live (1975), which was chaotic and bound for failure 90 minutes before airs. Directed by Jason Reitman (Juno) starring Gabriel LaBelle, Cooper Hoffman, Rachel Sennott, Dylan O'Brien and Cory Michael Smith. All play different cast and crew members of SNL. The film is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Release Date

  • Theatrical (Wide) - October 11, 2024

Nosferatu

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922)

With Robert Eggers highly anticipated fourth film after The Northman (2022) he brings us the horrifying tale of Nosferatu. Starring Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, Emma Corrin, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nicholas Hoult and Bill Skarsgård as the title character. The film follows a young woman as she is stalked in 19th-century Germany by a terrifying vampire. The film seems to be Robert Eggers on a higher budget again after The Northman compared to his lower budget first two films The Lighthouse(2019) and The Witch(2015). The film is also to be a blend of eerie horror and suspenseful mystery surely pushing its anticipation higher and higher the closer we get to the release date.

Release Date

  • Theatrical (Wide) - December 25, 2024

Moana 2

Disney released "Moana" in theaters on Nov. 23, 2016. (Disney/Entertainment Pictures/Zuma Press/TNS)

The sequel to Moana (2016) comes quicker than anticipated after being announced earlier this year on February 4th via Disney's YouTube. Although the same songwriters are not returning or the previous directors, the film seems to capture the same atmosphere and magic as the first film after eight years. With the voice cast returning including Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson. The film follows Moana being called by her ancestors to the seas of Oceania. Predictably the film is set to make a hefty amount of money after the first film made $643,332,467 and according to Disney+ Moana(2016) was the most streamed film on the platform in 2023.

Release Date

  • Theatrical (Wide) - November 27, 2024

Blitz takes place in a World War II-torn London and follows a nine-year-old, George, who is evacuated to the countryside by his mother Rita to escape bombings, the film follows his journey back to his mother. Directed by Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) and starring newcomer Elliot Heffernan and the four-time Oscar-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird). The film is currently in the front-running for multiple Oscar nominations and with its heavy themes and stellar cast is sure to become one of the year's best.

Joker: Folie à Deux

Joaquin Phoenix, left, and Lady Gaga in the movie "Joker: Folie à Deux." (Niko Tavernise/Warner Bros./TNS)

Following the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time that was Joker(2019) is a daunting task when audiences see that the film is a musical. But bringing in Lady Gaga to star alongside Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Academy Award for his performance as Arthur Fleck/Joker in the 2019 film, will help even those concerning odds. The film is set to follow Arthur Fleck and his newfound love of his life Harley Quinn and upon their release from prison their misadventure and havoc as a new couple. The film's songs will include 15 cover songs and a possibility of one or two original songs by Lady Gaga. Joker: Folie à Deux might seem like an unneeded sequel, but with all the talent behind it the film might be one of the best of the year.
